Arrival to Cairns

The main airlines in Cairns are Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue, the first one has direct flights from Brisbane and Sydney, and from Darwin and Perth, if you want to fly to Melbourne you can get a direct flight but most flight go there through Sydney or Brisbane. And Virgin Blue has direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. Jetstar has flights only from Brisbane. Cairns International Airport is 8km north of downtown and is the primary international link into the region and is also served by many domestic flights.

By Train

There are two main train services in Cairns, the Sunlander, which runs between Brisbane and Cairns four times a week, prices are between A$197 (US$158) and A$725 (US$580). Long-distance trains operates from Brisbane many times a week.

Tilt train connects Cairns to Brisbane (via Townsville and Rockhampton), this train reaches speeds of over 100km/h a trip between Townsville and Cairns takes 4 hours by car and can take more than 7 hours by train.

By Car

You may use the Bruce Highway if you are coming from the south (Townsville, Maclay and Rockhampton) to Cairns, and if you come from the west from the Alice Springs and Darwin via Tennant Creek on the Stuart Highway and the Outback mining town of Mount Isa to Townsville. If you want to visit Port Douglas or the northern beaches, take Sheridan Street in the city center, which becomes the Captain Cook Highway.
